I have been creating with wood my entire life. My father, George Lutz, was a Master Carpenter and his work is my gold standard. He taught me the satisfaction and pride in a job well done. I grew up understanding that "good enough" is not good enough. It is either right or it doesn't leave the shop. I learned from him early in life the rewards of working with my hands. I love the feel of a tuned bench plane, scraper, or chisel cutting and paring in preparation for assembly and finish. I love being able to provide a beautiful custom piece that I will sign my name to without hesitation.
Throughout my life my interests have varied with the one constant being my love of woodworking. Early in life I was faced with the choice of becoming a fulltime carpenter or pursuing a career in healthcare. In 1995 I acquired a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy. On the surface these fields appear unrelated. However it has been my experience that they are intimately bonded. I use the intense education of my physical therapy degree in the design of many of my projects. This education allows me to accurately design and build custom seating for my clients. There is little difference between fitting a client for a wheelchair, where they spend the majority of their day, and fitting a client for a custom rocker that precisely fits their unique physical characteristics. A rocker, mind you, which you would want to spend the day in. My ergonomics training has given me a unique perspective when designing office and kitchen pieces. I am able to make the adjustments necessary to meet the needs of the individual and yet not compromise in aesthetics or quality. My woodworking pursuits have been of equal determination. I have spent considerable time and resources learning everything I can. I have studied with some of the industries best including, Marc Adams, Stephen Proctor, Kelly Mehler, and Jeff Jewitt, My pursuit to be the very best I can be in woodworking does not vary and I am committed to providing my clients with the absolute best I can create.
My family and I live in Western Colorado in the small town of Montrose. My wife, son and I love it here as we are surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, Uncompagre Plateau, and Grand Mesa. My family is priority for me and we are anxiously awaiting two new additions to our family in June. My wife is pregnant with twins! It is really one of those odd feelings of joy and fear mixed together but I look forward to the FIVE of us. I'll keep you posted.
